And that’s how most of the record sounds. Reportedly one of the more difficult recording sessions in the bands history (Jeff Ament even walking out at one point), most of the songs grew out of late night jam sessions in between gigs. On album though….most of the tracks don’t sound finished.
I love just about every track live, “Red Mosquito” in particular sounding like a whole different song.

No Code (1996): I have a really weird relationship with this album. Even Jeff Ament has said “This won’t be remembered as one of the greats.”īest tracks: “Nothing As It Seems,” “Greivance” “Insignificance”Ĩ. The hidden track “Writer’s Block” sums up Eddie Vedder in the making of this album. A couple must hear Pearl Jam songs, but the deep cuts? Cut them. There’s some interesting ideas on the album, a much more meditative affair than the typical grunge rock. Seriously, listen to it with headphones on, it’s a whole different record. Using two microphones to make a 3-D sound, it’s designed to sound like you’re right in the room with the band. Binaural (2000): The most interesting thing about this album was the recording techniques used to record it binaural recording (see what they did with the name?). This was a very clear “album for the sake of a tour” record.īest tracks: “Mind Your Manners,” “Pendulum” “Lightning Bolt”ĩ. After an aggressive campaign behind Backspacer the band just sounds bored half the time. Sadly lightning didn’t strike twice on the rest of the album.

Lightning Bolt (2013): When lead single “Mind Your Manners” dropped, loud, angry, and full of energy, it sounded like Pearl Jam weren’t messing around. Eddie’s never been shy about throwing politics around, but even he was too on the nose with “Bu$hleauguer.” Sorry “Love Boat Captain,” this album sunk.ġ0.
Riot Act (2002): At a time when bands like The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, The Strokes, and the Foo Fighters were all hitting their strides, a laid back, folky, experimental Dylan rip off record was not going to fly. With the recent release of their 11 th studio album Gigaton, and more than a little bit of time on my hands the few weeks, I took a deep dive on Pearl Jam’s discography for the first time in awhile.
